How can I terminate?

Products you no longer need can be terminated at any time directly via the client interface, and you can then check the status of the termination or the deletion of your data.

In general, it is advisable to secure the data or transfer a domain to another provider before terminating your (other) products. (You will find below how to prepare a domain for transfer to another provider.)

Do you use a complete web hosting package? In this case, you can terminate all components of your package in one step.

  • Select “Packages” from the left menu.
  • Select “Open package”.

Termination 01

  • Scroll down to “Terminate package”.

Termination 02

  • After selecting “Terminate package”, you will see the status of the package here. If a termination has already been recorded for the product, you will see additional information about it. If no termination has been recorded, you can initiate one using the “Terminate” button.

Termination 03

  • You will now be prompted to select the terms of the termination:
    • Select a time for the termination. (Please observe the termination deadlines according to the GTC. For example, if a product has already been extended for a fee, the fees will be due immediately, even in the event of deletion.)
    • If a domain is included in the package, choose now what should be done with the domain. In general: as long as you do not absolutely want to extend or transfer the domain to another provider, choose “Delete”. Select “Domain only” if you no longer need web hosting or email addresses, but still want to “reserve” the domain name for a fee.
  • After entering the desired options, accept the deletion of the data via the corresponding checkbox. Then the “Terminate” field will be activated, and you can record a termination for your product.

Termination 04

If you manage domains outside of a web hosting package, they will not be automatically terminated with the package. In this case, you must record a termination for the domains concerned as follows:

  • Select “Products” from the left menu.
  • In the “Products” menu, select “Domains”.
  • Under the domain to be terminated, select “Show details”. If you manage multiple domains, you may need to click “Show all” to get a complete overview of your domains.

Termination 05

  • Scroll down to “Terminate”.

Termination 06

  • Make your selections here and confirm that the domain should be deleted. Then the “Terminate” field will be activated, and you can record a termination for the domain.
  • “Domain transit” should only be activated if the domain is to be used and returned to the central registration body Denic. In this case, Denic may charge additional fees for domain management.
  • Note: “Domain transit” does not mean that you are transferring the domain to another provider. In transit, you will not receive an authorization code via the client interface. We will explain how to properly perform a transfer to another provider in the next step.
  • Please note that when managing multiple domains, a separate termination must be recorded for each domain.

Termination 07

If you want to transfer a domain to another provider, it is not recommended to terminate the domain beforehand. Instead, proceed as follows for a transfer:

  • Select “Products” from the left menu.
  • In the “Products” menu, select “Domains”.
  • Under the domain to be transferred, select “Show details”. If you manage multiple domains, you may need to click “Show all” to get a complete overview of your domains.

Termination 05

  • Scroll down to “Transfer”.
  • In the “Transfer” section, select “Edit”.

Domain Transfer 01

  • Next to “Allow transfer”, you will see a slider. Set it to “Enabled” and save. After saving, a generated authorization code will be displayed to you, which you must communicate to your new provider.

Domain Transfer 02

Please note that when transferring multiple domains, a separate authorization code must be created for each domain.

A transfer or deletion of a domain included in a web hosting package does not constitute an ordinary termination of the hosting package. After a successful transfer of the domain, please kindly record a termination for the product as described at the beginning.

Understanding the impact of cancelling different products

Cancelling a product at hosting.de can have different effects depending on what exactly is being terminated. A web hosting package usually includes multiple components, such as webspace, databases, and, often, at least one domain. When you cancel the package, all associated services and stored data are removed after the effective date, unless you explicitly choose another option for the domain.

Standalone domains behave differently: they are separate contracts and must be cancelled individually. If you select “delete”, the domain will eventually be released and can be registered by third parties. Choosing “Domain only” keeps the domain active while other services are removed. For server products (like VPS or managed servers), cancellation typically affects entire environments, including any projects hosted there. Understanding these distinctions helps you choose the right settings in the interface and avoid unintended consequences.

Ensuring a smooth domain transfer without service interruption

If you want to move a domain to another provider, the safest approach is to complete the transfer before you cancel related products. A structured process can help:

  1. Clarify your target setup with the new provider: Make sure the new provider is ready to accept the domain and that you have the correct customer account there.
  2. Prepare hosting and DNS at the new provider: Set up webspace, email addresses, and DNS records in advance so that your website and mail services are ready when the domain points to the new system.
  3. Enable transfer and request the AuthCode: In the hosting.de interface, allow the transfer for the domain and note the generated AuthCode. Provide this to your new provider.
  4. Monitor the transfer status: Keep an eye on confirmation emails and transfer updates to ensure the move is completed successfully.
  5. Cancel remaining products afterwards: Only once the transfer is confirmed and stable should you cancel the original webhosting package or any no-longer-needed services at hosting.de.

Following these steps minimises downtime and helps you avoid losing control of your domain.

When to contact support about your cancellation

Most cancellations can be completed directly in the customer interface, but there are situations where contacting hosting.de support is the better choice. Reach out to support if:

  • You are unsure which products or domains are safe to cancel without affecting other services.
  • You have complex setups with multiple packages, many domains, or special DNS configurations.
  • A domain is business-critical, and you want to verify the best sequence for transfer and cancellation.
  • You see messages or options in the interface that you do not fully understand (for example, “Domain-Transit”) and want clarification before proceeding.
  • A previously requested cancellation does not show the expected status or confirmation.

Providing contract identifiers, domain names, and screenshots of the relevant interface views helps support quickly understanding your situation and guide you to the safest solution.
