How to configure Dynamic DNS via my Fritzbox?

Start by setting up a Dynamic DNS user in the client interface and subscribing to the paid Dynamic DNS service. To find out how to proceed, please refer to the support article “How to configure Dynamic DNS?”.

Now go to your Fritzbox’s configuration menu and navigate to “Internet” -> “Shares”. Then go to the “DynDNS” tab and check the “Use DynDNS” box. The other information must be configured as follows:

Configure Dynamic DNS 09

The update URL must be structured as follows:

https://<username>:<password>@ddns.routing.net/nic/update?hostname=<domain>&myip=<ipaddr>

The placeholders MUST NOT be replaced, as the Fritzbox takes care of this automatically. The update URL must therefore be entered exactly as indicated here.

Only the myip parameter is optional and can also be omitted. This is useful if the Fritzbox is operated behind another router and does not know the actual DSL IP address. If myip is omitted, the IP making the call will be recorded on our side. The update URL in this case will be as follows:

https://<username>:<password>@ddns.routing.net/nic/update?hostname=<domain>

Depending on the version of FritzOS, there may be differences in the update URL. In particular, for older versions, we have received feedback from customers indicating that the username and password should not be included in the URL. In this case, please alternatively use the following update URL:

https://ddns.routing.net/nic/update?hostname=<domain>&myip=<ipaddr>

If you’re setting up Dynamic DNS for the first time, here’s a quick overview of the key concepts to help you understand how it works.

What is Dynamic DNS?

Dynamic DNS (DDNS) automatically updates the IP address associated with a domain name whenever it changes. This is useful if your internet provider assigns a different IP address periodically, allowing you to access your devices remotely without manually updating settings.

How Dynamic DNS Works

A small client on your router or device notifies the DDNS provider whenever your IP address changes. The provider then updates the DNS records so that your domain name always points to the correct address, keeping your remote access reliable.

Benefits of Using Dynamic DNS

Dynamic DNS makes it easy to access your home network or services remotely, even if your IP address changes frequently. It’s particularly helpful for remote monitoring, hosting small servers, or running personal applications that require a consistent domain name.

Using DDNS on a Fritzbox Router

Fritzbox routers support Dynamic DNS natively. By configuring DDNS in the router interface, your domain name is updated automatically, making remote access straightforward and dependable.
