Use a Domain with Office 365 Online

This article describes how to use a hosting.fr domain with external web applications and online services of “Microsoft Office 365”. The configuration of DNS records at hosting.fr is mainly explained.

Prerequisites

  • You have an “Office 365” subscription that includes an Exchange Online server (in Microsoft’s cloud), for example, Office 365 Enterprise E3 or E5.
  • You have a domain registered with hosting.fr.

Add a Domain in Office 365

Please click in the “Microsoft 365 Admin Center”, accessible at https://admin.microsoft.com, on “Setup” > “Domains”.

Microsoft 365 Admin Center

Then click on “+ Add a domain”.

Please then enter the domain name you own and want to use, for example mustermann-domain.de:

In the next step, you need to prove that you are indeed the owner of the domain. For this, the appropriate DNS records must be created in the hosting.fr client interface. If an @ is desired as a record name, please leave the corresponding field empty in the client interface.

In the hosting.fr client interface, the entry will then look like the individual specifications of the screenshot, for example:

Microsoft 365 Admin Center

After making the DNS settings in the hosting.fr client interface, please click on “Verify” in the “Microsoft 365 Admin Center”. Once the verification is complete, you will receive the message “Your domain setup is complete”. Then click on “Finish”.

Configure the Domain for Email Reception with Outlook

Select your domain in the table and click on “Manage DNS”:

In the next step, please select “I manage my own DNS records”:

Click on “Next”. You will then be asked about the services you want to use with the domain. In our example, we choose only “Exchange” for emails, calendars, and contacts, as well as “Skype for Business”:

Please click on “Next”. An overview of the DNS records to be created will be presented to you:

If the creation of an @ record is requested, leave the “Record Name” field empty in the client interface, for example:

Microsoft 365 Admin Center

If SRV records are requested, they cannot be transferred one-to-one, but an appropriate string must first be constructed from the values:

Microsoft 365 Admin Center

For the first record, the SRV record should look as follows according to Microsoft’s specifications:

Microsoft 365 Admin Center

and the second record should look like this:

After making the entries in the hosting.fr client interface and clicking “Save”, please wait a moment and then click the “Verify” button in the “Microsoft 365 Admin Center”. If you have done everything correctly, a message will appear saying “Congratulations! Your domain and email addresses are all set up”:

Please click on “Finish”.

Test the Configuration

Please note that it may take some time, depending on the TTL of the previous DNS records, before emails can be properly received and sent by Microsoft’s Exchange server.

Please create a test user in the Microsoft Exchange Admin Center and assign them a license, for example, an “Office 365 E3” license:

Then go to the Exchange Admin Center and create a mailbox for the user:

Now log in via the Outlook Web Interface with the account, i.e., the test user’s email address and password, and check the sending and receiving of emails:
